16 ft Weldcraft hp

Postby steve in so la » Fri Jul 19, 2013 1:44 pm

Hello - I looked at a new Weldcraft jon boat today, 1648. It has a 60 hp engine, boat is about 650 lbs as is. Is the 60 big enough to push it on rivers & small lakes ?
Thanks, Steve in so Louisiana

God I would hope so. I run a 1448 with a 25 hp Johnson and see around 30 mph with it.

Whats the boat rated for?

A 60 should do everything you want in that boat.

it definentely won't be underpowered.
Red neck engineering- If ya can't fix it with duck tape, bailing wire, zip ties, and JB weld well than it can't be fixed.

If it moves and it aint suppose to duck tape it. If doesn't move and its suppose to put WD-40 on it.

I have a 1648 with a 70hp johnson. Loaded down with a full fixed blind, 2 batteries, 3 200lbs. Guys, dog, 50 decoys, and all the other crap we bring, I get a solid 35 MPH. That's without any hesitation to get on plane. If I run two guys and lighten the load a bit I can just around 40 MPH. The 60 HP will work great for you.

Just curious what made you stop at a 70 hp on a 16' hull? Ha, had to bust your balls. Didn't have a prob beating big boats to honey holes at least

I had a 60 4s on a 1650, and I could get 47 trimmed up all day long.

Most 16fters have 25-40hp, I'd say your ahead of the game.

I've got a 1752, with a 50 and will do 35
