Outboard won't go into gear

Postby backwoodsboy09 » Sun Sep 01, 2013 11:22 am

Bought a used boat 2 weeks ago and took it out yesterday. It has a 1970 Evinrude 25hp Sportster outboard, it was going fine for a while but after taking it through some weeds it wouldn't go back into gear. It must have popped out of forward and now won't go into forward or reverse. I know the older motors have a brass shear pin behind the prop assembly, before I tear it apart is there any other possibilities? I pulled the cover and checked the linkage there and everything seems to be working fine...sure do hope it isn't a lower unit issue!
Thanks for any input guys!

look on top at the flywheel. There is a piece connected to throttle linkage that will not allow it to go into gear when the throttle is opened past a certain point. Well this is true for most models.

No, you really want it to be a shear pin. They are really cheap and easy to fix..

sheer pin is made to break so you don't ruin lower unit - they are like .10 to 2 bucks in price and easy to fix.

Will the engine rev up, but the motor not go, or is it stuck in neutural and engine RPM wont change with throttle?

Engine RPM will go up when rev'd. When I go to switch it into both reverse and forward it doesn't make any noise when switching gears.

Pulled it apart today and it was the drive pin. The previous owner used some sort of hollow tubing instead of the actual part. Called all the local parts store and no one has it. Either I am going to make my own out of rod stock or wait the 5 days for some to be shipped. Thanks for the help guys!

You/re making too much out of this. Cut a piece of welding rod and be done with it.

Walk into a west marine store. Or any marine dealer they will have a bunch. Does not have to be a 1970 evinrude pin. Many many others will fit. My buddy hit bottom one year and had no spares left. I dug through my bag and found a roofing nail. Used pliers to cut it down and wala we finished the hunt. He is soo lazy he used it for two years before replacing it
