Pocket Hull and a surface drive motor???

Postby SATX duckman » Thu Sep 19, 2013 11:20 am

So I have a 16 foot weldbuilt with a 30 hp 4 stroke mercury. The weldbuilt has a pocket hull which works great for the motor but I'm thinking of buying a surface drive or a beavertail motor. I've heard with the pocket hull that it wont handle all that great with a surface drive. I was wondering if anyone had any experience or any thoughts on this.

Thanks for the insight

Is a pocket hull a tunnel hull?

I tried a PD on a 1648 Sea Ark Tunnel and it wouldn't plane out at all...

Surface drives suck on a tunnel hull. Long tails work ok.

Well a pocket hull is similar to a tunnel hull but it only starts about halfway down the boat. I would guess another option would be to have pods put on it but i'm gonna go through all that i would probably purchase another boat. Thanks for the input. Maybe the beaver tail would be the way to go.

That's the way they build tunnel jons. I have never seen a true tunnel in a jon style boat before.
