Removing Stickers From Fiberglass?

Postby TopWop » Wed Oct 23, 2013 4:25 pm

Ok I acquired this boat this summer (free). I turned it into a neat little
bass boat. Meaning I added a Bow mount trolling motor, fish finder, ped. seat etc.
I actually had it out on the river the other day and ran some pretty shallow water.
With two fat guys it planed out pretty slow so I got some sport tabs to fix.
Sooooooo, now I'm going to take it duck hunting. My buddy already told me he's not
going with me until I at least get it painted. He was kidding but I would at least
like to get rid of the 90's, saved by the bell, Fresh Prince decals.
Anyone have experience with removing 20 year old decals from fiberglass?
Until I figure out if I'm going to have it wrapped or painted I'm going to cover it
with netting. Any ideas on a new finish?

Video before trim tabs installed. It's just me farting around on a lake.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help

Heat gun and a razor blade. Should come right off. You'll need to remove the residue. You can do that with mineral spirits or acetone. Be careful with the acetone though, if you rub too hard it will eat through the gel coat. Not a big deal if you're going to paint it though.

Is that an old sea doo boat?

No T-Man, it's a somewhat rare 1991 Bayliner Jazz w/ a
Mercury 90 hp sportjet. I don't think it had 50 hrs on it.

Just googled it. Appears to be Bayliners answer to the Sea Doo boat.

WD-40 and a scotch brite pad or rag will remove the residue. A razor blade might scratch the gel coat

Try a pressure washer. You'll need a good nozzle to cut em' off.

I've checked out some DIY wrap kits. I've also been to a local
vinyl wrapping business. Since the boat is white I was looking
at some snow camo patterns. The local outfit doesn't have any
licenses for patterns. They only had some digital patterns, which
I hate. They said they would apply any wrap that I brought in.
I can't even apply my screen saver on my phone without bubbles,
let alone a 14' sticker! If I do wrap it I'll post it.
