18 hp lt vs 15 hp outboard speeds

Postby Rhock19 » Sun Oct 27, 2013 3:19 pm

I recently picked up a 70's johnson 15 hp outboard that needs a little work. I run a 18 hp lt on my 1448 mod v now for marshes and backwaters and it gets around great. speeds with two ppl and gear are around 15mph. Running big lakes with the longtail on rough days is a chore to say the least. The outboard is about half the weight of the lt. My question is, when fully loaded will the 15hp put out enough to keep me around 15mph or greater? any info would be appreciated. thanks!

I had a 9.9 Johnson 74.i put a 15 hp carb on it and I was lucky to gain a mile an hour.the boat was a 14 ft semi v.it run around 17 mile and hour loaded around 13.i have a skiff now with and 18 hp.just with 1 other guy and fishing gear it goes about 19.with added gear and livewells full about 17.you should be able to go 15 mile an hour but not much more.

You should hit the 20's with a 15 outbrd with light load. Most applications an 18 hp lt is equivalent to a 9 hp outboard depending on load and motor condition

Correctly. Propped you should see 20s

You've been given good advice.
The only time the LT will be faster than the OB is when the OB is in heavy vegetation/mud and is going nowhere.

In clear water, the OB will be faster.
