Smoothing pitted aluminum

Had my boat sandblasted and have since sprayed painted it. My registration numbers from a boat decal website will not stick to the side. I'm guessing because its too rough.

Anyone had this problem this before? I've considered sanding the area and repainting or adding multiple coats to the area to try and smooth it out.

Thanks in advance

I had issues with sticking numbers to my boat after repainting it also. I used ms word to print out the numbers in a font that I liked. Then used blue painters tape to tape off a section of the boat where the letters should go. Put the printed template over the tape and used an exacto knife to cut the numbers out through the tape. Shoot with the color spray paint of your choice. It took a little time but I don't have to worry about the sticker numbers peeling off.

I did close to the same thing. I painted a green down, laid my numbers and letters out, then painted my whole boat tan. Once it was done, I pulled off the vinyl and had numbers I never have to worry about.

Thanks okie, I'll try to use the degreaser. I already bought the decals for $40 or I would paint them on. The decals were camo and just too cool to pass up
Hope your boat is not camo,Mr.Greenjeans won't like that. Numbers must be of contrasting colors. Post them up so we can see when you get them on.
