How do you guys see at night?

Postby Droberts » Thu Dec 12, 2013 9:43 am

I was curious to what you guys use for running your boats in the dark? Ive been using just a hand held light but looking to upgrade to something that is mounted to the front of my boat. I don't want to drill any holes in my new boat so i was thinking of building a bracket that would line up with my trolling motor holes and mount a light off of that bracket. Do you guys have any recommendations on what light to get or pictures of your boats with the lights mounted on them that you could post for me?

I have a hand-held spotlight that I turn on when needed, but mostly I run in the dark and just use moonlight to see.

x2. There are some lakes/rivers with stumps and logs floating where a constant light is needed, but the lake I run is debris free.

Look up led bars. I think rigid is the big brand mame. Theyre made for offroad trucks and equipment but lots of guys put them on their boat. a buddy of mine has a spot/flood combo and it is fantastic. you can see 200 yards in front of you and plenty wide around the boat with the combo. I use two fog lights from autozone and they work well. when its foggy nothing works IMO. Try and get LEDs as they dont draw a whole lot from your battery.

Hard hat sil beam spot light. 100 watt aircraft lamp. Hands free and shines a long way. No drilling holes in your boat. Just hook up to your battery and go.

Look into getting a handheld flashlight that has a lens and uses the cr123a battery's, there really bright and go out to past 100 meters when focused with the lens.

I bought some Cree LED light bars and they work great! At less than half the cost of Ridgids.

If I was going to keep the boat and not thinking of trading it in I "might" look into some expensive brand, but so far these have worked great.

I have a rigid 10" e-series, expensive but worth every penny and you get what you pay for. I don't have any decent pics if it mounted on my rig, these are the best I can do.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Think i am going to get a 12" LED light bar. I figure between that and a buddy up front using a hand held light that should be plenty of light. Once i get it in and on the boat ill post up some pics for you guys and see if i can get the DHC approval on it. Again thanks for the ones that gave me the information i was looking for!

There's a thread on mud motor talk about converting some lights to hid's. I have done a lot of research and those are the brightest way for the cheapest.

Most of the time though I just shut them off and run. I can see fine, if I had my lights on I would have less time to react to logs when I'm on the river and it's slick

I just got done doing this conversion over the weekend. About $80 for 2, 35watt HIDs at around 3200 lumens each. Puts out ALOT of light. Will be using them on the water for the first time this Saturday.

I prefer a hardhat light. I use Pro-Drives.

But to be honest most my running is done with the spotlight off, If there is no fog I can usually see farther without lights. Once I Get to the area then Ill turn the light on.

The river I run is stumpy and rocky. Stumps I am ok with, but rocks will ruin your day quickly. With the ever changing river level more and more rocks pop and disappear. I try to mark all the big one I can with my GPS, but can't get them all. I run with a set of lights on the front the boat. I have 4 lights, 2 flood LED ( 4000lumens total). 2 Spot another LED 2200 lumens. I have them on separate switches. Running Marsh the floods work best, river the spots are better.
