You may know this already, but if you are not doing this on a commercial basis, there are spray-on zinc-rich coatings available from a variety of manufacturers. It may sound like it's a gimmick, but I've used it and it really works.

I've used the Rust Oleum Cold Galvanizing on boat trailer parts. Looks good to me been on their about two years and no rust.
