what hp longtail for 14ft flat bottom?

Postby crb3510 » Mon Jan 20, 2014 10:25 pm

I have a 14ft 48in wide flat bottom, all welded alumacraft that says it is rated for a 10hp motor. I am going to put a longtail motor on it and was wondering what size. I was thinking about a 13hp and it would way about a 100 lbs. Is that too much motor for this boat? Thanks for your help.

Surprising that a 1448 welded hull is only rated for a 10 hp. My 1448 tracker grizzly is rated for 25 hp and I bet it could handle more. As far as the longtail goes I think you could easily run a 16 and personally I'd go at least 23. I currently run a 25 on my 1348 homemade crawfish skiff and it has zero trouble floating that motor. Actually considering upgrading to a new 27 or 35 swomp longtail for it. Now I make long hauls with considerable load for the boat. An hour each way.

I agree that seems really low for an all welded hull. My 1448 riveted lowe is rated for 25 also. I run a 18 hp longtail and its a good motor size. Gets me around at a decent pace

I have a 14x42 Dura Craft. I can't tell what it is rated for as the Coast Guard tag has been painted over so many times. I have pods on it, and run a 23 HP Backwater longtail. Works good.
