Boat Trailers

Postby IdahoSkies » Thu Jun 05, 2014 4:17 pm

When looking around there are lots of 2nd hand boats, a few motors, and even fewer trailers around. I inherited a short 12 foot jon, and while I can throw it in the back of my pickup, I would rather have it it sitting on a trailer so I can have a small blind attached to it. Besides criag's list, where should I be looking at for trailers, and what would I be looking at if I had to buy one new. (shudder). And where.

Thanks.

I believe harbor freight sells kits

Agreed! For a boat of that size, the Harbor Freight kits are a great option and inexpensive.

Fleet farm up here in MN sells trailers for a boat that sized at around $500 or less. Don't be afraid to look for new trailers for a small boat.

I would avoid Harbor Freight for a boat trailer. Even their heaviest trailer is a bolt-together unit. It might be fine for twice-a-year hauling brush to the city dump, but I wouldn't trust it for a season's duck hunts. Keep looking for a used, name-brand boat trailer. One will turn up.

I made a great small boat trailer from a jet ski trailer that I bought for $250-I just modified it by adding bunks and added new lights. Has been working great for 4 seasons now-that's something you may want to look into.

Me too:

Although, I am severely jealous of Rob's rig. I actually copied his netting and camo cover idea because it was the best idea I had seen so far.

Looks really good. Did you come up with the plans your self or did you have some already drawn up?

The jetski trailers might be a good bet for a short boat like your 12 footer, but they are too short for any boat much longer.

That's true-I made the tongue on mine about 2' longer and extended the bunks a bit too. It fits my 12'9 sneakbox with room to spare. Pretty easy mods to do-cost me about $50 total.

I have found some trailers at local auto salvage yards. If the boat is junked or something, they will sell them at the price of the trailer. Toss boat and use the trailer. My stepson works for a trailer manuf. co. and is getting me a new axle and hubs for about 100. My old trailer is from '80. Still in good shape, but the axle could use some work after I drug it about 2 miles with a locked up bearing last yr. Kind of flat on one side. And for $100 bucks, I would basically have a really nice little trailer. Why not? By the way, Academy has trailers and are cheaper than most. I love that store.
