Tohatsu Mega 25 Outboard Motor

Postby hurricane1542 » Thu Feb 07, 2008 8:15 pm

What's the highest y'all would pay for a Tohatsu Mega 25 hp in great shape? It's really a factory 3 cylinder 40 with 25 hp serial numbers, so you legally drive a 40 hp in 25 hp restricted lakes.

Don't know bout Arkansas but some gw's in LA were giving folks a hard time or handing out tickets for running Mega 25's. Might check with a local gw in your area to make sure it's okay. Just what I know from friends I have that used to run them. Great motor!

I think that was because the people that were running them weren't true mega 25's. That is, they didn't have the serial numbers to match. This motor has 25 hp serial numbers on the block casing as well as on the outside of the motor that correlate with a 25 hp tohatsu. Some of the other guys were just putting 25 decals on their 50 or 40 hp tohatsu's. But if the numbers match with a 25 hp factory motor, than the only way they could restrict them is to say in the restrictions, no larger than a certain cubic inch. Ive asked the GW in Louisiana and some folks that hunt down there.

i can't find anything on tohatsu's website about a mega 25. where is this motor sold?
tohatsu has a 25 hp and a 30 hp 4 stroke with the same CC engine but the electronic control unit and the crank are different. the 40 hp is an entirely different block. much larger cc's. i assume we are talking about 4 stroke tohatsu??? if you are talking about 2 strokes, then you will not be able to purchase a new 25hp because they do not pass the emissions standards and are no longer available. the CC difference is big between the 25 hp 2 stroke and the 40 hp two stroke. the 25 hp has 430 cc's and the 40 hp has 697 cc's. any game warden would be able to pick up on that if the decals were changed.

It's a 1993 two stroke, 3 cylinder motor. They don't make them anymore, oh well, guess y'all have never heard of it. It's a unique situation that occured in the early 90's. Only lasted 2 years. The 25 decals come from the factory that say 25 mega and the metal plate on the motor say 25 hp and the block serial number says 25 hp. Nothing the GW's can do about it. They were all shipped to lake area marine and tuned back up from 25 hp like they came from the factory to a 40 hp with added carbs and other stuff. Nevermind, just thought someone would know about this. Thanks anyway guys

The Mega 25 Tohatsu was imported from 1993-1995. We imported 144 total. Lake Area Marine recieved 139 Megas, 5 were shipped to another dealer in La.. They are perfectly legal on ANY WMA that allows 25hp outboards. And yes, only 144 legal Megas were ijmported, there are most likely 300 "mega wannabes" running around. Simple to detect, just call the serial number in to Tohatsu in Dallas. And if you can find them for $1500.00, I'll take 2 dozen. The going rate for a completely rebuiilt Mega is $5000.00. Give lake Area a call.

I know we're talking about Tohatsu's but i'm pretty sure you can still get a 2-stroke yamaha 25 right? Why can you get a 2stroke yamaha and not a tohatsu

no i understand that the Mega 25 is faster. What i'm asking is why is it that yamaha can still produce a 2stroke 25 when everybody else only sells 4 strokes? I thought all the other manufacturers went to 4 strokes because they had to due to emissions... Sorry to hijack

Yamaha went to 100:1 fuel mix and was able to pass emissions standards. At least that's what I have been told. Anyway I like mine so far.

Hurricane, are you selling one or were you asking because you have you found one that your interested in? I don't recall if you said before. Is it a 15" or 20" shaft and is it electric start?

Thanks,
TC

If your not wantin to pay that much for a mega the next best motor is A three cylinder 25 Suzuki. You can grab one much cheaper than a mega and still get mid 30mph range easily and high 30s wt the right boat and setup. We had a 98. Suzuki on a 1546 xpress wt exhaust drilled out, boyseen reeds, 15 pitch ballistic prop and the linkage cut off the carb to provide complete wide open throttle and ran 37.4mph wt two guys, deeks, and guns.

That is illegal. Want to rethink asking how to do that in a public forum with traceable ip's?
