Beginner Taxidermy Question

Postby Slammerblue527 » Thu Dec 22, 2005 5:57 pm

I am very anxious in beginning taxidermy. I am going to do my first mount as a gray squirrel then move up from there.
I was wondering how I should go about preserving the skin.
Should I learn how to tan first and tan the skin or can I just use borax or something like that?
Also if anyone knows of good videos, I have one on squirrel mounting but would love to someday be able to mount birds and so on by myself.
Any info would be great, Thanks!

Happy Holidays!

Be sure that you flesh the skin of ALL meat and fat. Then wash skin and rinse throughly and towel dry. On small skins such as squirrels denatured alcohol can be used to preserve it. It may take a few days. Check to be sure the skin is white all the way through. There are lots of tanning formulas available but for starting, denatured alcohol will work and you can get it locally. The borax will work also, just be sure the skin is throughly scraped clean.

Thanks a lot. I shot a squirrel yesterday and it is all skinned out ready to be fleshed and preserved. Thanks for the tip!
