SALTY ducks 2012

Postby duxrus » Mon Dec 24, 2012 12:12 pm

Well, this year's WA state adventure found us hunting in many different scenerios. Some good, some bad, and some plain out laughable. Brian from Camodipped.com accompanied me this go around and hopefully had some fun. Here are a few pics from the trip. He flew back today but I will be adding some layout hunts this week until I head back next weekend.

We tried to knock off his harlequin early in the trip but between high winds and "bullet proof" waves :lol3: he had to wait until the wind subsided enough for us to finally get to our "X" on the map.

His died about 5 minutes into the hunt and ours came soon after.

Since we had found puddle duck heaven a few years back on the Columbia river we opted to give it another go since the temps were below freezing and a foot of snow had just fallen. After the 4 whhel drive going out on one truck, a wait during an Avalanche control stop, and basicly a blizzard along the way we finally made it. The duck numbers were lacking but we made due before heading back a day early with another foot+ of snow forcasted. NOt my best hunt but by far not my worst. We downed 2 pairs of gadwals as our hosts cheered.....Gaddies are VERY rare over here. Brian and myself just laughed about crossing the country to shoot grey ducks :grooving:

The best day "for myself" came the first morning at my GE layout spot......After Brian had shot his drakes I decided to follow suit. Luckily I picked the right target amongst the decoying flocks and picked up this trophy. My friend who I hunt with out here killed one last season and love(d) to brag about killing the only banded Barrows GE in Washington. Needless to say he just rolled his eyes when I handed him mine saying "there must have been two"

Not being greedy, I will hopefully find a third one before I fly out.....

I hope Brian had as good of a time as I did and will have an open invite back once he gets done with his counsiling over his first harlequin encounter :nana:

Great hunt Brian. Someday I hope to join you! I'm not after the bands, so those are all yours!

I haven't called the band in yet....

I slept in this morning to give the GE's a rest but just couldn't take seeing scoters flying by around lunch time so I headed out...

I'm not done just yet.... :grooving:

Got my Barrows GE's again this morning (missed a nice Commom  ) and only had one scoter that wanted a boat ride. Hopefully I can limit out on GE's and get the elusive Common before I head back on Sunday. Would be cool to kill a banded one to go with my Barrows

Not looking for your WA state honey holes, but where are you? I live up on Whidbey and if you were around I would buy a round.
