Never been - which one do I want?

Postby migrabill » Thu Nov 02, 2006 12:33 pm

Hi guys- I'm new to the boards. I have deer hunted most of my adult life. I live in Maryland. The day after Thanksgiving a friend of mine is taking me on my first duck hunt ever. We are going to Bethany, Delaware. If I am lucky enough to bag one, I would like to get one mounted. He tells me we hope to see and shoot at Mallards, Blacks, Gadwalls, and maybe Widgeons. Of those, which one would make the best mount? Is there any there you definately would not spend the money to get mounted? Anybody familiar with the area that knows any other type of duck I may see? Thanx for any answers.

In good plumage, they all make great mounts. I think most people out here (Wisconsin) would want to mount the Widgeon, followed by the Black, purely due to the fact that we don't shoot alot of either species. The Widgeon has the most color variations, provided they are in good color or full plumage, but the Black Duck is one of the toughest birds for mr to decoy.

Good luck and happy hunting!

:welcome: i agree with pete, but in my neck of the woods we get a lot of woodies and hooded mergs. but it all depends on the condition of the bird and what you want.

Im still waiting on a Black to mount. Personally i never though of getting a Gad mounted because they are thick as gnats here and I have a some mallards and a widgeon done already. And i would pay to be put on a Canvasback, just dont see em down here.
If ya don't like being peppered, don't set up near my spread..!!!!!

I would say out of the ones you mentioned widgeon.
The group ended up with 420 birds.

Well-
I went on the trip. In terms of which one to mount. It is a no brainer. Here I am with my first (and only) duck. Kinda takes the choice out of it.

I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

I'd get the Greenwing mounted!

Thin skinned little buggers! You'll make some taxidermist very happy.

Congratulations! It looks like a nicely colored bird.
