Crescent on bluewing

Postby beretta24 » Tue Sep 24, 2013 5:40 am

So I glasses a pond this past weekend and saw a bet teal with a full crescent distinguishable on its head. It wasn't even close to full plumage but I never seen that in mn period, much less in Sept. It got me thinking, could it just be an old female? Thought you folks would know better than others.

I'm in Indiana and our early teal season just went out. We only killed one BWT with a crescent this early season, and that bird was pretty far along in developing its plumage. Wish we got more of the fully plumed birds - I love how dark those BWT get.

Not out of the possible realm to have a bird that has a t least some crescent coming in, could be an old drake or old hen. You figure with the millions of a species like that, there is likely to be a few that molt a little earlier than others or just a genetics thing. Love the blue wings myself

Come to Obregon or Mazatlan with me sometime. I've shot all three species out of one flock several times.

It's funny how many I get brought in during turkey season with a client saying he had it in his freezer since duck season!!
