Hooded merganser

Postby ErieAngler » Wed Nov 20, 2013 6:27 am

I shot what I consider to be a stud drake this past weekend with no visible shot marks. I'm thinking about having it mounted but cannot decide. After all it is a merganser. Does anyone have any hood mount pics?

You will get more pics and faster searching Google images

I prefer a swimming and semi-tucked head for hoodies. Gorgeous birds.

The one that I have mounted I shot down in Iowa...we just didn't see many of them down there, so I had it mounted. Now that I live in MN, I shoot a couple of nice bulls every year....They make nice mounts, but when they fly, the hood is down, and they just don't make good flying mounts...

They do pop it up some, but I think mostly near take off and landing. If ya search google images you can see some good examples, although they usually aren't peacockin' quite as much in the air.

I shot 1 a year ago and i mounted it myself. The reason i mounted it was that 1. It had to be one of the best looking ducks i have seen. 2. We mostly shoot puddlers so getting a diver was cool to me. You should mount it if it is special to you.
Good Luck in the field-Mike.

Did mine myself two years ago. They are in my opinion one of the prettiest of all waterfowl. I regret not doing a standing mount because you cant really see his brown side feathers. Sorry for the crappy pic
