Duck ID?

Postby duckman27 » Mon Dec 23, 2013 3:16 pm

He came in with a hen mallard and sounded like your typical mallard drake. I'm thinking it a mallard mixed with some kind of park duck. The bill is bright orange and wider than your typical mallard bill. What do y'all think?

I'm not even going to guess? It is beautiful though. It would be on my wall.

It does not look like a straight up offspring of two ducks to me. In other words it looks like a hybrid that bred back to a mallard, and this is perhaps that offspring? The bill is certainly confusing. Almost giving the impression of hen, although this time I don't think so, but maybe so?

Great bird, and I'm not sure you'll get an exact answer?

It looks like a dead duck that would soon be on my wall.

Not sure what species it all entails, but either way it is awesome!

Looks kinda like a possible wigeon mix, but the bill is confuseing. I guess I have no idea what it is. Would be a cool mount though.

There are many variables when a wigeon and mallard hybridize, but normally they have the yellow bill similar to the one in question. Unlike the pintail and gadwall combo which typically have those distinctive characteristics. With the sprig resembling that hybrid, the large white outline on the speculum, I would agree with wigeon X mallard, but maybe a wigeon X mallard hybrid that bred back to a mallard and this is its offspring.

I'm sure one of the experts will have some input? Eric, Brian or Pat care to make a guess?

I'm starting to think mallard wigeon. The breast and bill pattern are exactly the same. Only difference is the bill color

nope. your bird has 2 feet. this one only has one! im thinking what pete said. a cross that crossed back with a mallard. your bird looks beefier then a straight wigeon cross.

FIIK? I would say he has some park duck in him or that He is an very old she. I do not think it's a brewers, it's missing most of the vermiculation the gadwall gene would incorporate. I see no widgeon characteristics as well. But that is just my guess. Cool bird though.

Pretty sure it isn't a black/mallard cross. The ones I've seen exhibit more black duck than mallard. And, I don't think there's any wigeon or pintail in there, either. The bill color on those crosses would be blue if anything. That said, I'm leaning towards a gadwall/mallard cross aka Brewer's duck. The bill has both colors (yellow mallard and black gadwall). The face, below the green, is similar to a gadwall and the wing markings also favor a gadwall.

Anyway you slice it, it's a cool looking bird.
