can my hooded merg be saved

Postby SQUAWKnemi » Tue Dec 31, 2013 12:05 pm

Yesterday I shot a pair of hooded mergs a drake and a hen together. I had to go to work so I left them in my buddies freezer to pick up today. My taxidermist is out of town till the second so I can't get in touch with him to ask my problem till than. I know this will depend on the taxidermist but i was curious if anyone had a similar problem and was able to save the mount. To be honest I dont know that much about the tax process so this might not be an issue at all.

but my problem.... My buddy left them on his porch for me to pick up this morning. His little brother ties fly's and we tell him anything in the yellow bucket he can take to use the feathers. Well today he translated the yellow bucket as the porch and he took all the brown feathers out of the wings of the drake hoodie. I want to get the two birds mounted together standing together on a log or something with wings at the side, nothing too fancy. If u google hooded merganser drake and hen mount a similar pic will pop up to what I want. He gave me the feathers back so I can see if it can be saved. As I said I know it will depend on my taxidermist, but has anyone had a similar issue.

Laughing out loud!

Sorry man, I would wait for another. Will someone be willing to do it? Yea, but I'm not into Frankensteining birds together. Those feathers are prized by Pacific Salmon fly tyers for sure. I have a guy who will take every shoveler and hooded feather from that same spot your Brother nabbed. In my opinion, I would wait to shoot another.

why don't you just get someone to 'gift' you one? You've already taken one so it's not like you'd be mounting a bird that you've never shot before (nothing against anyone who does that of course). They all basically look the same around hunting season anyway.

Good Luck

You will shoot another pair of hoodies. If they are tht special to you I would say go for it. They would not look super good though. I hope everything turns out-Mike.
Good Luck in the field-Mike.
