My GoldenEye Mount! Opinions?

Postby Nkush808 » Sun Feb 02, 2014 6:54 pm

Ok guys,
I decided to get my first duck mounted which was a GoldenEye! I live in the Chicago area so I checked out a few places to get it mounted. I came across a taxidermist in Lombard, IL and I figured I'd give them a call. The guy talked about his experience in the taxidermy field and how he has had many happy customers, I trusted him and he told me it would be $325 for my duck. I was very unsatisfied with the mount... The head is practically flat when it should be sort of "fluffed" up.
Here are some pictures, please tell me your opinions!

You trusted him.....did you not check out his work when you dropped off the bird??? If you think it is a bad mount it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. My advice is to swallow the bitter pill you have and search for a new taxidermist now.....not after you get another bird to mount and are rushed into a decision. Good luck and sorry you are not happy......it is a lot of money to spend on a hard earned trophy and not like it.

The duck is fair but not horrible. It definitely isn't high quality work. Now the blue edge of The plexiglass is horrible. Leaving it clear would have looked 100% better. Not sure I have seen anyone do that before and for good reason.

Never fall for a good sales pitch where someone tells you how great they are. See their work with your own eyes. I always laugh when someone uses the "I have been doing taxidermy for x number of years"....some people apparently never got good at it.

The question I always ask..... Why did you accept that and pay for something you weren't happy with ???

Yeah you didn't receive a good mount. However I agree with the others, its your job to see the taxidermist's work before you give him your bird. You should never take his word for it or think that number of years in the business equates to quality. However I do not agree with duxrus in that you shouldn't have accepted the mount and paid for it. You chose him and that's the mount you got so you have to pay up. You don't have to ever go back to that taxidermist but it was your mistake so you do have to pay for it.

Hopefully I didn't come off as a jerk, I truly hate seeing people give a taxidermist their hard earned money and receiving a poor quality mount. Always see their work in person first.

I should have asked if he made his disappointment known to the taxidermist? If so the taxidermist should have made it right .

My opinion? Except for the "water", I could've done as good with 1 bird under my belt. I actually gave my first bird to a friend of mine tonight because his 2 yr old son was obsessed with it...

Chalk it up and learn. Research who is doing your birds before giving up cash.

My guess is that this guy does big game heads as well and your bird was put together last minute when it was convenient for the taxi. Not saying that all guys that do big game heads can't do a duck but I've seen it more than often when a taxi will blow off a 300 dollar duck mount before a 900-1200 dollar elk head. Take your next one to a bird specialist.

Now about the mount.. I'm not in the buiseness of bashing on another taxis work but this one has obvious issues. From a critique standpoint it looks kinda dirty still( not washed good enough) as well as not dryed good enough( kind of ratty looking).

There is also grooming issues that tie into my previous statements as well as to much neck exposed for that pose.

I also agree with Brian the blue edge on the plexiglass is not needed.

On a positive note the feet look well injected and the over all theme of the mount is cool.

I can agree with everything said. I wanted to point out one thing. The bird had plumage issues as well. The pepper specks in the white cheak is a give away. Also the scapulars and pocket feathers were not developed as well as it could have.

The pose is off and the GREEN reeds against the ice (and blue rim), make little sense?

The most important thing to remember is what every disappointed person has done, who makes this same mistake. You didn't do your homework. Had you looked around, or shipped the bird to a professional, you would be showing off your bird with pride, instead of shame. Lesson learned. No need to beat you up any further. $325 should have gotten you a better mount, but you won't be the last person to post a thread just like this. I've been here for 9 years....probably seen 100 posts just like this?

If you wanted to have some scenery, do you think you could have gone to a craft store and pulled off something better? Spend the money on the bird alone, and make your own diorama. I know a guy who sells many replicated additions that can make any mount pop. He visits this site often.

In that case, I totally agree. If a taxidermist says you'll be happy and you're not, you can tell him and if he wants return customers, he ought to make it right
