This fall when I get my first nice green head, I want to get it mounted.

I dont need anything really fancy, just mabey "a duck on the rock" mounting.

Ive talked to a couple of taxidermists, but I want to know about how much something like this should cost (ball park).

AND, does anyone know of any other good looking mounting positions (besid es the "duck on a rock", that dosnt cost my dogs front left paw?

Thanks for Ya'lls help!

Woodies, and Mergansers are the most expensive because of the feathers on their heads. You can figure 30-45.00 less for your bird. I had my Taxi tell me this in January. I'm paying him 145.00 for a banded woodie, on driftwood. He's a State/National Taxi Champion too. Cant wait to get him back!

First off, I've never heard of charging more for the head feathers. From my experience, there isn't much difference in mounting a Woodduck -VS- a Mallard, except for the thickness of their skin.
.#DraKE you are getting a Heck of a deal on those two birds if indeed the quality is there. Price isn't everything!
Alaska, I'm not sure what you were quoted on a price, but I heard everything costs more in Alaska. Around here $150 to $200 is the going rate for a duck sitting, flying, or with a crest. I personally like a pretty greenhead coming in to land with it's wings fully cupped.
Waylon, I think that the Merganser is the easiest duck to mount, and the Woody is the hardest based solely on the thickness of their skin, and the fleshing that follows. Nothing to do with their head crest. Just my opinion. Wings cupped, Pete-pec

Here in SW MO my buddy gets around $175-$180 for ANY duck and around $250-$270 for ANY geese.
As I've said, and agree with previos post's, you get what you pay for.

Souff,
It shouldn't, unless you go to the guy that Waylon goes to! :toofunny: Just kidding Waylon, but I've got to believe that this guy is charging more for something that easily comes together anyway. ie the crest. Stouff, there are some guys out there that will charge a different price for a sitting bird -VS- a flying bird -VS- a nice scenery. For one, the duck sitting on a rock may cost a bit more, because an artificial rock can cost about 30 bucks at a taxidermy supply company. If you mounted a flying bird on a piece of driftwood, it shouldn't matter what position you had the wings.

Stouff,

Here in NW Arkansas my son and I doubled-up on a pair of Mergansers. The price of the pair was $330.00. Checked three different taxidermist, prices ranged from $155.00-$180.00. I went with the one we have used before at $165.00. His geese are $300.00.

Always know that you get what you pay for! I can't express that enough. A top of the line mount should run you anywhere from $175-$225. Don't settle on the $50-$100 job if quality is what you want.

I have so many items at my taxidermist that I take him money every month. I have a thick file in his file cabinet. Even when I didn't have something there, I still took him money because I knew I would be bringing in something else sooner or later.
I once traded a processed deer for a beautiful pedastle shoulder mount of my big 10 point three years ago. My taxidermist buddy told me his sister needed some meat for her freezer, so I used one of my many rifle tags for an antlerless deer (doe, we can buy as many as you want here in MO) and she had meat. He traded me the meat for my mount. The cost of my tag $10, processing fee $70 and 15 minutes of time in the stand got me a $350 deer mount!
