Who Uses HeviMetal??

Postby wingseeker » Thu Mar 29, 2012 6:09 am

Just curious how many goose hunters are using the HeviMetal shells. We used them during
duck season and the conservation season on the geese AND LOVED THEM. It is amazing
the distances you can cleanly take a big Snow Goose at with these shells.

My cousin uses it in a 20 gauge M1. He killed a number of canada geese with it.

I think they're alright, got a buddy with a new SBEII though and his gun won't cycle them. I personally love Black Cloud Snow Goose, BBs for geese, 2s for ducks.

Too expensive to shoot at snows when it's possible to go through a case of shells in one day. Don't need it for ducks when they're decoying. Definitely does some work on those Big Canadas though.

Theres something wrong with your buddies gun then. I've been shooting Hevi-Metals for 2 years now out of my SBE2 with no problems at all. There a great shell, I'l definitly be buying another case.

I have trouble getting the primers to detonate in my browning, but not one issue with every other brand of shell I put in it. That was enough to keep me from buying more

Really...coming from the guy who attacked my ammo choice... Never said anything about how awesome I am, guess you assumed that. Didn't see your earlier post what primer issues did you have? Haven't heard much about primer issues.

Yea really, I was really just giving you a hard time about the teal thing. But then you had to throw your money around, which includes your assumed awesomeness to me. I had multipule issues with light strikes/non-detonations in the 3 boxes I had I probably had 1 whole box that would not fire. I even ran some of them back through and got another light strike/non-detonation. One shell took 4 times for it to fire, I wish I would have taken pictures but I was hunting and not concerned with taking pictures of failures. I used 2 other brands of shells in those hunts including winchester, and federals had no issues with those. I dont know if your presses were setting the primer too far in or what but when I grab 2 differnt brands and they go boom I know it isnt the gun.

Nope i just moved on and kept hunting, using way cheaper and more reliable shells. I dont ever think about it till I see some random post about how awesome they are, and I think to myself about how awesome they werent. Good luck to you Shaun and I hope you have a great season.

I shot hevi-steel before the hevi metal came out, also shoot black cloud sometimes depending on whats on sale. They have always got the job done, of coarse your gonna have a cripple here or there. Never had any problems with them not shooting in my 870 m1 or a5. Sounds odd you had three boxes do that.

My buddies use it, but I just can't bring myself to paying the price for it. I've heard good things about it, so I'll have to try it out now.

Hevi metal really didn't pattern well out of my gun/choke combo which was disappointing because i had much better patterns with equal or cheaper ammo. I am def not a believer but that's imo

From all the pattern testing I've done with this ammo I found that it is choke sensitive. Took me 3 chokes to find the right one, but once you find the right choke they do pattern pretty decent. Over 80% on paper at 40 yards with BB. I'm using a Carlson extended steel modified choke. Factory Benelli choke and Cabelas brand modifed patterned HM horrible, around 60-70% on target at 40 yards.

Crippled a goose. I use Federal Blue Boxes. Had some left over ammo in the bucket so I grabbed some. Put a round of Hevi-Metal in and it was game over. Was quite surprised at the difference in knock down power. I don't think its worth an extra $100 bucks a case when I go thru over 2 cases a season.
