question for snow guys

Postby gray_dog » Sat Mar 01, 2014 4:49 pm

First off new to the forum. I was wondering if a spread of 10 dz full bodies and "tnt" shells as well at 4 dz floaters would do descent on migrating snow geese. I do not live in an area that stages alot of geese but we do see plenty on migration days. I am planning on hunting pasture ponds 1-4 acres in size. I just wanted to know your thoughts on this spread and whether or not I would just be wasting my time. Also, if you do think it will work out decent what are some other things that you guys might add besides an e-caller of course. Thank you for your replies in advance.

Sometimes you don' nee a big spread for small ponds give it a try and remember not all the snow geese come at once they come in several flocks so scout and count an average flock and try to be on the X.
on the X in Saskatchewan

Well.. then he can still get 10% of the geese!

#1 rule is hide yourself. They wont come if they can see you and a flock of 100 birds has 200 "goose eye's" peering down at you. Invest a lot of time in this.

You can call geese in to an empty field... but decoys make the calling reliable.

Your decoys will work, you'll pull tired singles off big flocks and a few small flocks will commit here and there, at least they'll come in close enough to whack 'em. The thing about it is snows like their numbers.. a flock of 10 wont like the looks of 5 or 6 decoys but that same flock will like a spread of 4 or 5 dozen decoys... and so on.. you have 150 or so birds on the ground so you can easily work flocks up to 60 birds or so.. so long as they can't see anything else that has more numbers, be it your hunting neighbor with 500 dekes in the next field over, or a refuge across the road with 5000 birds in it. you want to pull in flocks of 500? better get yourself 1 or 2 thousand decoys.. but you sure can pull in a lot of birds with a few dozen shells.

Location is really important. they just don't like some fields.. maybe they can smell chemical fertilizer or hate certain kinds of manure... i dunno what it is.
