I think they are fine. I would hunt over them! Look at some of the companies that make goose decoys. G&H geese I think are the darkest out there, but I have killed so many Canada geese over those things I have the mentality that if it isn't broke, don't fix it. That being said, other decoy companies such as GHG and Final Approach have their decoys painted similar to yours. Bottom line, I think they are fine.

Black on the tail looks shiny to me...Might try some ultra flat black. Other than that, they look good. The lights are light and the darks dark. Good contrast adn thats what you see from afar.

how did you paint them like that? i think that looks sharp. I have some decoys that need touching up, but am worried i'd make them worst then better by trying to paint them.

Things you will need:
Krylon Camouflage Paint with Fusion Technology
Colors: Khaki- 4291
Black- 4290
Brown- 4292
Flat exterior house paint.
Color: White

Paint brush

First you will need to clean the shell to get rid of any dirt, dust, and loose paint. you will end up with a old ugly decoys like this
Image

The next thing to do is take the Khaki paint and paint from the last row of feathers all the way to the front of the chest. make sure you get in all the ridges of the wings as these will make it look more realistic later.

remember light multiple coats look better than thick sloppy coats.
Image

Next is the brown coat. in order to make it realistic you want to mist the paint at a sharp angle from the head to the tail. I hung the decoy vertical and sprayed the paint 12-18 inches away from the decoy at a downward angle. make sure that you dont add too much paint and you will darken it up with black later.
Image

Next you will do the same thing using the black paint. this will darken it up making it look more realistic.

The next thing to do is paint the tips of the wings black.

To finish up the body, use the white exterior paint and paint the sides of the butt. this is what it will look like with a finished body.

Notice the contrast of the top of the feathers and the tips of the feathers

I just repainted the heads on my decoys but will flock them during the off season. you could also flock the tips of the wings in back instead of painting them.

This is how my shells turned out.

Nice work!! Ive got a pile of shells and floaters that I am going to get after once the weather turns. Was planning on painting just as you did except apply krylon 1311 matte finish after painting. How many dekes were you able to spray with one can of each spray???? Thanks, CDW

I found it depends on the size, the ones in the pictures are mag decoys and it took me 1 can of khaki to paint the undercoat. and half a can or so to do the brown and black. i also painted a dozen life size this week and with previous experience i did a dozen with one can of each.

it will all depends on how dark you want them, how many mistakes you make. and the size of the decoy.

for a good medium i would day one can to every 6-8 decoys.

also be careful with the matte coat, i have heard from a few people that it gives off a pretty good shine. might want to look into it a little if you haven't already.

Those look great. Can you guys give me an opinion on the ones I have painted. You know when you do it yourself you always think they look ok, but some other eyes may not. I haven't paited the white yet, but that is soon to follow. The decoy showing had faded to a light gray before the paint. Gimme the brutal truth and suggestions, won't bug me any.

I've found that "drybrushing" also works very well for adding feather detail.......
