anyone know who makes these decoys?

Postby spoonysmaker » Sun Jun 10, 2012 7:43 pm

Picked up 16 of these fullbody speck decoys off Craigslist for $100 today. The guy didn't know who made them. I know iv seen them somewhere in my never ending quest for decoys but can't remember. Sorry about the dog. He likes to sneak into pics.

If it looks like a really hard, thick, solid plastic that would seem to shatter if you smashed it, then it's a Herters.
BUT- Herters were always conspicuously marked...
It also could be a Vector Animal Trap, but I didn't know they made Geese

That description matched it rite on the head. All in all a good price for a decent decoy. Saves me hundreds I was gonna spend on speck fullbodies this year.

Where are the marks usualy on Herters? The bottom I take it? I like the small whole the decoys have for the stake. Seems like it will sit better.

It looks as though there might be a foot stand that fits into the hole, if there is no mark on it, it may have been on the feet

I've got 21 of those (mine are Canadas). I also have some Herters floaters that are nearly identical in build and material but the FB's are not marked. I assume they are Herter's though. I'd recommend you get fiberglass rods to use as stakes since that has worked well for me. Wood dowel is an ok option if you hunt in ground that isn't too hard

Thanks for the info. They came with some small 1 ft fiberglass poles. I'm already planning on getting some fiberglass poles so i can use my shells more in the marsh. Anyone know where I can get some cheap 1/2 inch fiberglass rods? Home depot online has some Orange "driveway" markers but they dont carry them at my local one and shipping is just as much as the rods. Might have to suck it up and by 45 of them so the shipping is free.

Those are Herters full bodies. I still own some. I used to live just down the road from Herters when they were in Beaver Dam, WI. I used to buy those bodies, heads, and feet out of the discount bin.

Big Foot made their first, short-lived (IE: one batch) run of specks in the '90s, but that's not them.

Sorry for the confusion Rick. I was commenting saying that Bigfoot may have scared these guys out of the decoy market because I have some of these Herter's and they are dang durable decoys but would look a lot like a Bigfoot with the foot scheme I am imagining. Mine are Canada's so I am curious if Herter's made both species or if his specks might be hand painted.

In the 2000 Herters catalog they were still selling this decoy as the Model 499 Herter's Goose Decoys. They came in Canada, Snow, Blue, Speckbelly and were mounted on a 1/2" fiberglass stake for $149.99 a dozen. They also painted these decoys as mallards for$139.99 a dozen. The feet were sold seperately as Model 499 Full Body Goose/Magnum Mallard Field Decoys Big Webbed Feet for $39.99/6.
