Which Matters More?

Postby luie b » Mon Sep 09, 2013 8:43 pm

Alright, I currently have 30 Canada goose shell decoys that are alright looking and just got rid of a dozen shells that weren't looking so good anymore. I don't own any fullbodies and really like the looks of them. With this small spread of decoys, would I be better off to get a 4 pack of fullbodies to add some detail or would I be better off getting a dozen more shells to beef it up more since I'm short handed? I know I'm right at that amount of decoys where I almost have enough numbers but then it's also a little small at the same time for hunting here on the Miss. flyway. Most spreads have at least 60 usually so it can be hard to get geese into smaller spreads unless you're on the X which only happens about 10% of the time. Thanks!

I would keep the shells for numbers but start buying full bodies. Setup the full bodies closest to the kill zone, and the shells on the outside of the spread. That way you have the most life like where the geese will be.

buy the most realistic deeks you can afford for realism and put em in the hole. keep all your shells for numbers when you need them.

four would definetly be better but I was guessing that 2doz silos would be somewhere around the cost of a 4 pack of FB or a doz shells.

Bump it up with full bodies. We use 2 1/2doz full bodies, doz shells, and then 1 1/2doz floaters when we hunt a pond bank and only went home without birds once from there last year.

Full bodies strategically placed (walking in as if they just landed, sentry around resting birds here and there)..will go a long way...
But also remember, that every 1000 bird field started with a handfull of birds landing and it grew and grew.
Later in the season, sure they look for security in big numbers, but putting out a few dozen deeks in a good shape, wind scenario will yield birds

I think I'm going to keep buying a box of fullbodies each season so I'll eventually have a good collection. And I'll also start swapping out shells for silos because I want to eventually compile a ton of silos for running traffic. (Which I have to do way too much in the season.) I've tried running traffic with 2 dozen decoys and it's just way too hard. You have to call until you're lungs give out, wave your flag til your arms fall off then they just may once in a while give you a look.

What Matters More? Id say it doesn't make any difference if youre not in a field the geese want to land in. Ive shot a lot of geese with 12 747s and 4 full bodies while the guys a mile down hunting the same type of field . using 200 dekes of various types never fired a shot. I think if I only had shells and was going to invest more money, the bucks would go with the full body.
If you're there for the limit, you're there for the wrong reason
