Staying with one brand of decoy?

Postby Huntman27 » Sun Jul 13, 2014 9:52 am

Right now I have 6 of the new FA lessers, 4 higdon alphas and 12 higdon wobblers. I'm looking to buy about 3 more dozen decoys and staying with one brand. I like the FA decoys. The paint seems to be holding up well, but it seems the color might be a little to light. The higdons are alright. They came in the box with small paint chips and splatters but it seems like the paint is holding up alright but not as good as the FA decoys. The feet are also shiny but I sprayed them with flat black paint. The design is very nice and looks realistic. Money is an issue but I'm willing to spend more if they are truly worth the money. Any suggestions on what I should go with?

Get DOA. Paint is spot on and will last. I've had terrible experience with FA paint coming off

Well DOA's go for about $200 a half dozen so 3 dozen would be over $1200. Then you have to buy bags for them which will probably be another $250. So id be spending around $1500. I could buy a lot with $1500!

DOA or Dakota painted lessers, no bag needed. Or switch to real geese silhouettes and ditch the bulk all together.

I like silos.....well I hate full bodies because I don't want to buy a trailer. Lol

I haven't used them a lot but I run them on sand bars on the rivers although we don't see many geese I have shot more mallards hovering about 4' over top of the real geese than I have over the Dakotas on the opposite side of the spread.

I'd be willing to try some white rock socks also.

I don't want to sound stupid, but if you don't use a bag what do you use for transporting them?

I've narrowed it down to staying with my FA's or higdons or maybe selling them and getting DOA's or Avians.

Unless you are sold on decoys made in China, have you ever thought about Original Big Foot full bodies. Made in Clinton, Iowa? I have Big Foots that were made in the 80's. The other brands mentioned weren't even around then.

No, I never had them but know people who do from 10 years ago and still look real good. I just don't have the room for their foot connections and the big sized body.

I like the higdons but they seem a lot darker than other decoys which kind of annoys me. I have no problem with the FA's but are a lot lighter in color than the higdons. It just looks weird

Get Bigfoots. Look good, last forever. Just get a small trailer, make cheap sides with 2x4s and plywood. Hook and go. Youll spend less on trailer than rebuying decoys every 5 years.

This. I don't understand the attraction of all these different brands, different feet, different heads, paint comes off, bodies break or crack. These brands will come and go, and they keep changing designs so you won't be able to get parts. I've had three dozen Bigfoots for more than 15 years and they still look awesome! No problems whatsoever. No paint chips, not one broken head or foot. We also use silhouettes, still using all my old Outlaws, though they are getting beat. I'll have to spring for some Al's I suppose.

One of my biggest wastes of money was on FA decoys. Go with the bigfoots if you like the FA decoys you'll love the bigfoots. I have also tried Tanglefree GHG and Dakotas but Bigfoot lasts the longest.

I'm running bigfoots and B-2s. The originals are better but the B-2s seem to be holding up pretty well and better than a handful of GHGs I started with. One guy I hunted with got 8-9 bigfoots into a big mesh bag he bought at Cabela's for less than what the 6 slot bags cost.
