Birds in South Dakota

Postby luke835 » Wed Feb 23, 2011 4:59 pm

Saw two good sized flocks of snows and blues in Yankton, South Dakota this morning. Just thought I'd give an update.

Probable the ones that were down in northwest mo flying around on the 20th. Sounds like they beat feet to get the heck out of dodge before the 6 inches of white stuff we got.

Mike,

Do to school and work I havent had the opportunity to get out and scout (actually i just go fishing in yankton and scout on my way out and back). I'm hoping I can get out in the next week or so but with this warm spell we have projected for the next week im assuming they will be around for awhile and the ice line is still pretty low in Southeast SD. Ive seen huge flights of canadas but I'm pretty sure i heard some snows in the dark tonight.

Good luck on your trip to yankton!

Checking in to see if the snows are coming in Yankton, heading up with Mr. Keller on the 17th. I talked to a guide that said the fields in that area did not get as much snow? and seem to be not as sloppy as last year.
Thanks, POTT

I was down near Beresford, Viborg and Irene on Friday and there were a number of large flocks in the area. Most of what I have seen has been a little south and west of Sioux Falls. It has gotten colder since, but will be warming this week. My guess is that the southern and central parts of SD will be good this week and probably heating up in N. SD by the end of this week.

Couldnt tell ya much about Yankton, however I do know that there are probably close to a million birds roosting on the missouri right now near vermillion and surrounding areas. From about 4 - dark at night all you can see are constant flights of birds. Friends from missouri think that the thick of the flock will be here by the end of the week so you should have a good hunt! Post back with pics would ya! Wish i could get out in between work and school. Saving my time off for duck season though!

Yankton maybe , I'm thinking redfeild should still be froze up. I hoping to head up by redfeild last week in march might have to change it to the week before. It will be a different year if they don't get any rain for sheet water.

Just an update from a little south of SD. There are birds everywhere in central NE around the Kearney NE area. Have became very thick the last three to four days. hundreds of thousands. Fields are white in some places and we don't have any snow on the ground. We have been killing them to. So don't worry boys they are on their way up to you soon.

There might actually be a snow line soon.. Got some snow, getting more here in ND! Sounds like blizzard conditions for much of Southern ND and lots of SD also..

Birds are in between Sioux City and Vermillion. Its the front end of the migration but saw some good numbers moving to fields just north of vermillion. Hunting should start soon!
