Well I'm 17 and I shot my first duck when I was 14. Since then I've killed 100+. Including mallard, wigeon, hooded merganser, canadas, gadwall, ringneck, shoveler, green wing teal, and ALOT of wood ducks. But to entertain i'll tell you the story of my first duck.
Well in 8th grade for Christmas I got my first pair of waders and a big 4n1 Drake jacket, and a box of 3" #4. The only place I had to hunt was a 2 acre cow pond. And I had to WALK there EVERY time I wanted to go hunting, and I always went by myself. It was about a 2 mile walk.
(So decoys, shotgun, 1600gram waders, 2 mile walk + 4N1 jacket = Long sweaty cold walk). So one morning I left my house at 5 and got there by 5:30-5:45. I think it was literally like 14 degrees. So after breaking through 3" thick ice. I opened up about a 20 yard wide hole. Threw out, what had to of been (due to my ignorance of the importance of the spread) the worst decoy spread ever. So it was probably 20 minutes before daylight and I huddled into one of the holes on the bank. I remember it being so cold that I laid my gun in the mud and just huddled inside my jacket. I couldn't call so all the woodies and mallards that flew over too tall to shoot had no reason to become inticed and commit. Well after watching all these ducks just fly over I almost gave up. When across the cow pond I seen a coyote. I tried to ease up and atleast pepper him really good. When all of a sudden I here something making a fast whistling noise. I look to my left and here it is cupped up and coming in. I pulled up and put the bead on its body pulled the trigger and PLOP it fell into the water. It took me a minute but I got out of my little side bank hole and waded out to retrieve the most beautiful duck I had ever seen.
A big ole ugly Hooded Merganser Hen........
