what shells

Postby Naterdashotgunner » Wed Nov 19, 2008 9:48 am

Hey Im using a 20 gauge remington 1187 and I got some 3in steel 1s for geese and i was wondering what a good duck load would be. Also has anyone ever tried 1 shot in a 20 gauge and how did it work. I mostly shoot at mallards if that makes a difference.

with a 20gauge I would use 4s for ducks because if you use larger pellets you will not have enough pellets to make a killing pattern. for geese I would say 1s or 2s.
btw I have an 11-87 also great gun

For ducks I use #4's or #3's when you can find them.

Kent 3" 1 1/8oz #3s is my all around duck load going 1560fps. I use #2s if I have a box just laying around, but I don't really like #4s much. Estate makes a good 3" duck load as well!

Ditto with the comment up there. #4's for duck and 1's or 2's for geese. I do use #2's on occasion for ducks. But i am hunting out of a layout blind and shots are quite close. Wouldn't do it in a situation where I was pass shooting or taking 30 yd + shots.

Personally, I would stay away from the Winchester Xperts. Theyre cheap and some say they really like em, but I had a old box left over that I shot today and it was crappy. Not to mention they're so much more dirty. Just my opinion. My Kents on the other hand.... :hammer:

well i got like 3 boxes of 2s drylok and 2 boxes of federal 1s and like the remington hevishot (not hd) 4s so i should be set for most of the season, but usually we will find shells on sale every once in a while. My dad the lucky one got a deal at walmart last year after he season was over he paid like 4$ a piece for i think dryloks for his 12 gauge, he bought it all and now he should be set for about 2 years on steel shot.

Finally somebody agrees with me on the Kent #3's.
I forgot how many it is but you get a few more pellets with 3's than you do 2's. Plus 1560 fps is hard to beat.

I reload an ounce and a quarter of #6 hevi-shot for duck and #4 hevi-shot for goose and #2 hevi-shot for coyote out of my 20 gauge. #3 steel also wors good for duck.
I also shoot 7/8 ounce of #3 steel ant 1,560 fps out of my 16 gauge side by side

I would go with Hevi Shot.... Why?

With Hevi Shot it is a smaller pellet diameter then steel, so when looking at 2's in Hevi Shot you get more pellets then 2's in Steel. Using a 20 guage that normally has less pellets then its big brother the 12, don't handicap yourself and use steel.

For ducks I would go with a Hevi Shot #4 will give you plenty of pellets and Hevi Shot has plenty of knockdown power behind em. Gor geese I would go with Hevi Shot #2's. Those combos are what I use in my 12 guage and kill lots every year.

Whatever you go with, good luck

I shot a 20 for many years, will kill both ducks and geese with the proper load.

I used 3" 1oz #3's for mallards up until late season, late season I shot 3" 1 oz #2's out of a mod choke.

For geese I shot kent impact tungsten matrix 3" 1 1/8 #3's. That load will put a goose right on its rump out to about 40yrds. But its not cheap, $25-$30 for 10 shells.

Not sure you can get a steel load heavy enough to kill a goose beyond about 25-30 yards.
Why do I shoot 3.5" for geese? Because they don't make a 4" yet!

All i shoot now I Hevi-metal after I shot up my crappy winchester xpert and odd ball rounds at the start of season.

I would suggest #3 shot Hevi-metal.

I don't know why everybody's bashin' the Xpert shells. Yeah they're cheap but they're pretty good out to 40 yds. Keep your shooting up to date and these shells are awesome!

Bashing xperts because they a bunch of crap.. cripplers past 25 yards unless you shoot full choke and hit the bird with 30 pellets.

2010 I shot a bunch of xperts, I couldnt get a clean kill. 90% of my kills were crippled, either swimming on the water or glided for 10-20 yards before falling. I couldnt figure out what was wrong, they patterned good. I was changing chokes, messing with my lead and doing all sorts of stuff trying to get a clean kill. Finally I just said screw it and started shooting federal and kent, cripples went away. Now 90%+ of my birds are stone dead before they hit the water.

A couple months ago I got curious to why the xperts wouldnt do the same, I mean I'm only taking under 30 yard shots so a .410 should be able to kill them. So I sat down and cut one of the xperts open to see what was inside. Shot anywhere from #7 up to #BB and not a single uniform round pellet. They patterned good but hitting a mallard with #7-6 steel is just asking for a cripple, which is exactly what they did.

Now they are my cripple/crow/starling loads.
