Hey everybody, I'm looking to get into hunting big game with a muzzleloader and was looking for advice on which rifles to look at. I'm really interested in the Hawken style percussion rifles, I know pretty much every manufacturer makes one of these and was wondering who has experience with what. I'm not really interested in inlines or flintlocks. I'm also thinking about building from a kit, does anyone have experience with that? Thanks for any advice!

You'd be better off just buying one that has already been put together. My dad built one and you'll shoot about a 2 foot 3 shot group at 5 yards. They're horrible. I'm gonna stick with the inline. The Hawken is probably you best bet at far as traditoinal guns go

Austin & Halleck hands down the nicest rifles you will ever shoot but I dont think theyre in business anymore so if you can find one that has been well taken care of jump on it. You wont regret it. Theyre both accurate and beautiful.
treat every situation like a dog. If you cant eat it or hump it just piss on it and walk away

I have a CVA Hawkins .50 that's been a good gun. Killed a few deer with it and it's reasonably accurate.
It's just my opinion but inlines make me sick. I don't feel they should be classified as "traditionals". 209 primer, brick powder, sabots... they're awesome at killing deer and very accurate, but I don't hold them in the same regard as I do percussion and flint guns. Again, only my opinion.

I built one of those kits. It works good.... for a paddle.
