I have a red dot (Burris FF II) on my TC Encore pistol in .444 Marlin. YES, I said .444 Marlin. I load 300 gr bullets at around 1900 fps and even with no magnification, I can shoot to about 150+ with it and have before. I also have a Bushnell Trophy red dot on my tricked 870 slug gun and wonuldn't hesitate to take a 150 yard shot with it in open terrain, but most of my shots are 100 and under and I practice with red dots A LOT. For trully long range capable guns, I would go with a traditinal scope. Just more precision with it. If you're NEVER going to shoot past MAYBE 200 yards and are well practiced with it, I would say go wit the red dot. Still...scope would likely be a better choice...
