I grew up with a mossberg 20ga pump with a mod choke. I hunt over a springer so i will be shooting at birds out to 20,30 even 40 yards. after wounding a big hen at 30 yards I went out and picked up a Ithaca model 37 featherweight 12ga for 550 $ at cabelas the gun is only 6.5/6.75 lbs and with the added range fits the bill perfect for me. Its light and can make the long 30,40 yard shots with #5 Soo it depends on your dog and where your shooting. but I think a 12 or 20 pump is the best bet. Check out the ithaca 37 featherlights, they come in 16 to and are very light weight and reliable, they are single eject so if ur lefty there great also they look pretty, i wanted a gun that looks good..
Every day in the field is a good day..

I prefer a good 20 gauge o/u but I'll take my 12 gauge auto out if the weathers bad. For an upland auto something that is inertia driven is perfect because of the lighter weight as compared to a gas gun.
