sounds like ur uncle needs a few lessons in turkey hunting to me. thats not much to be proud of. and i hope u dont follow his lead in poor (very poor) hunting ethics. 9 times outta 10, that bird takes a few pellets in the guts, flies away, dies later, and becomes coyote food. :pissed: he should realize that what he did was not turkey hunting. he may as well have flew over in a helicopter and shot it. both ways kill a turkey, neither is hunting.

welcome to the forum, and i hope u have some happier stories in the future.

I would have to agree with pensyltucky. At 80 yards with that size shot, the pattern had to have been in the 10 ft+. range. That would be like rolling a 10 foot bowling ball at it. I woulnd't call that a hell of a shot.

Glamor shots should be attempted on the range, not in the field

I'm so tired of seeing turkey 60+ yards away and not wanting to come in I think I am going out with the .243 this weekend. Lets see that wiley bastard gobble then!

As for an 80 yard shot with a 12 guage? That seems kinda far fetched man. Did you use a range finder or did you step it off or is that a guess? The reason I ask is that I had one at 90 yards this weekend and there is no way I would have taken a shot. You do realize that 80 yards is almost an entire football field right?

Sounds a little far fetched but i would never take a shot like that.
The group ended up with 420 birds.

Yeah, I wouldnt ever take that shot with a 12 gauge. Ive shot at ONE turkey with a shotgun and that was at about 45 yards. Didn't kill it, didnt even look like I touched it. I wont take another shot past 35 yards on a turkey. Not saying you cant get lucky and clock it in the perfect spot on the head. Somebody mentioned something about a .243. I don't like the idea of that. ANYBODY can kill a turkey with a rifle, if one comes up during deer season and you only have a rifle fine, but in spring turkey season I dont think its right. My dad and I went out and got NO birds.... but we easily could have gotten about 4 if we had used rifles.... not that sportsman like if you ask me.

THE ONLY THING THAT WORKS AT 80 YARDS OUT OF A SHOTGUN IS BUCK SHOT!

Well almost, I have a 10 guage with 32inch barrel and a full choke, even with lead BB's 80 yards is what I would consider maximum range. Here in California the biggest shot you can shoot is #2. I might still be able to pull an 80 yarder with 2's.

I have to think there was a little more in those home loads than some 6's

Original story sounds a little fishy to me too. Sounds a little bit like a made-up story for the purpose of making the SBEII sound like a long-range sniper shotgun or something.

If I'm wrong about that, then I apologize and say this; Congrats and shame on your uncle all at the same time. He should know better, but at least he and the turkey got lucky this time. -SM

Ive heard an arrow is pretty accurate out to about a 100 yards but you have to have a short barrel
