overkill for a squirrel? im just looking for a good "all around" varmint gun. around here we have a ton of armadillos, squirrels, possums, raccoons, coyotes, you name it...i've used a .22 in the past (not for the coyotes) but was thinking about making the move to a .17. Savage makes a good looking one that they sell at my local walmart for 165 which seems like a good deal.

.17 is a great all around gun plus it shots alot better than .22
but ammo is about 10X as much too therefore i find myself shooting the old .22 because i like to do alot of plinking and shot 200+ rounds in an afternoon...... a few afternoons like this would get a little $$$ with a .17
but all in all i am very glad i have mine

the .17 is an awesome gun, it makes the .22 obsolete. It is worth the extra money in bullets. You can hunt everything from squerls to coyete. But the only thing i could tell you is that i had a savage for my first .17 because the price was cheep, if you are looking for a nice .17 go with the ruger. Let me know if you need any more help

I agree that the .17HMR is a great all around varmint caliber - fast and flat shooting...way more effective than a .22. You did list coyote though and they aren't that effective after 75 yards due to it being such a light bullet. If you have a lot of yotes the .204, .223, or 22-250 are all good choices imo.
