what to use for rabbits

Postby kms399 » Sat Jan 06, 2007 10:15 am

i am going to chase some rabbits for a little bit today and wonder should I use the 12 with small shot or the 22. we plan to walk for them like pheasants because we always kick them up while pheasant hunting. so running shots are expected.

thanks
another one bites the dust

If your kickin'm up then i'm gonna say 12 better yet 20 if you've got on or even 410. A 22 running shot, you got skills.

You will be having mostly running shots, you 12 ga. will be great and I'd use # 6 shot, should do the job& good luck :salude:

we rabbit hunt religously and have my whole life, we have used anything and everything bows, shotguns of all sizes chokes and shot and 22's. if you are relatively good w/ your 22 thats a blast!! its not as hard as ppl make it out to be. we hunt we dogs and use 22's alot. we use peep sight on ours and have good luck. if you were to use youre shot gun i wouldnt use anything small then 6's. if you have em #4's are even better. also, i would recomend a light load like 3/4oz. out of a 20 and say 7/8 or 1 oz out of a 12. we use tight chokes and aim for the heads as they run off or run by. imp and mod have too much spread and fill your wabbit full of lead. at least w/ the full out to 25 yds or so your pattern should be pretty concentrated up front. ideally a 20 ga w/ full choke 3/4 oz. #4 is what i use and i chew less pellets then i did w/ mod or imp.

A few weeks ago i took a rabbit with my scoped .22 when my partner kicked it out of a brushpile on the way to the truck. I go with a 20 ga. with a modified choke and 6 shot, i have shot 8 out of 9 rabbits i've seen with that gun.
