Roosted is Roasted

Postby goosetalk » Mon Apr 16, 2007 1:33 pm

Well , today was the opening for Missouri. Last night, I roosted my birds as usual and drew up my game plan. I sat between a bird that I heard gobbling, and a bird that my dad and I thought was a gobbler we heard fly up but never gobbled. The plan worked, the bird we heard was in fact a gobbler and he gobbled his head off. I was 70 yards from him, about 10 yards into the woods. I had 3 decoys out including a repainted B-Mobile. The bird flew down, I gave him a few soft yelps, and he started my way. He was on the next ridge and disappeared into a ravine. So I played a guessing game on where he would show up, and my guess was correct. He appeared 35 yards away, saw the decoys and began strutting. I let him get to about 25 yards, clucked, and fired. I shot a little low but still good enough.

24 lbs.......1 1/8" spurs.......9" beard
Not the best turkey for me, but still a great one.

Goose, that is a great looking bird ther. Congratulations on a job well done. Sometimes those 3 1/2 year old birds can be tough to break.

Excellent story and outcome!

Do you hunt locally or go elsewhere?

Again, congrats!

I usually hunt locally, sometimes I travel near the Iowa border. That hunt took place on just a 75 acre tract that my grandpa bought.
