First Squirrels of the year -- WARNING to the weak stomach

Postby fowl_wishes » Mon Oct 13, 2008 5:50 pm

Got home from work today and decided to walk around the neighborhood looking for tree rats. Ended up with 3 on the ground. Nothing spectacular. But not bad for 10 minutes before my daily fat boy walk. And between my Savage 17 HMR and head shots I didn't mess up any meat. I assure you they died quickly.

Nothing like sniping those buggers with a 17. I do the same thing after deer season from some of our tower stands where they love to pop out at around 100 yards. Just don't hit 'em low or there will be nothing left for the pot.

Great pix!

DEAR God YOUVE RUINED THE BEST PARTS OF THE SQUIRREL, the heads always go in the freezer fry them up and the brains and the tongue are the best parts. :hammer:

The brains are too high in cholesterol.
The glass is not half empty or half full, it's just twice as big as it needs to be.

If you miss a lot of birds, does that make you a conservationist?

Not to mention the most likely center for disease......but they sure do taste good!

Don't worry Smack, once I am able to head to the woods in proper fashion I will take the .410 and have plenty of brains to tide me over.

you should see what it does to a muskrat/nutria head!!!! I peeled the lid back on a couple last year. Looked like little ashtrays.

And it amazed me what it would do to larger animals too. I thinned out a pack of wild dogs last year. I tried to do it quickly with head shots. But one shot pulled too far back aind hit it in the chest.....4 steps and he was dead. That little 17 grain bullet exploded about a half inch under the skin and WRECK the heart and lungs on a chow/pit mix.

Savage 17 HMR bolt (forget the exact model number). See first picture.

Ammo is Federal 17 Grain with V-Max bullets.
