How are you fishing for them? Casting? Trolling? Vertical jigging? Live bait? 20 fow or 200 fow? I know lots about our lakers but nothing about west coast trout. They get a bad rap over here, not the most desirable fish.

How big to the salmon run out there? Whats considered average? Whats considered big?

Out here anything over 20 pounds is big. They used to be bigger, 30+. Nowadays a very large one is 25-30.

I've never caught a salmon. My friend catches a bunch be he normally goes into the ocean. I will talk to him tonight and let you know what average salmon size is here. I know that we have the chinooks and coho. I think I once heard that Atlantic salmon are much larger.

I am not a fisherman. I fish 5 or 6 times a year.

Atlantic salmon are smaller, I don't know what their average size is but I know its smaller than pacific kings. The kings we catch are pacific strain. We have kings (chinook) and cohos too.

Lake trout or ( Mc ) are a deep water fish in most waters here on the west coast and at Lake Tahoe and Utahs
Flaming Gorge they get up to 40 pounds plus...............

Jigging will work but a calm day is needed which are few out here...........if over ten mph winds the best way is to troll
with either live bait behind blades or dodgers or going with large minnow lures like Rapalas near the bottom or up in the feeding zone if they are active. 3-4 mph speeds are not too fast............ and an electric down rigger is sure nice to have.

Don't forget the Pro-Cure !!

Trout fishing lures and baits need to be worked in different manners. Use medium-weight spinning gear to bottom-fish with dead ciscos or suspend live minnows beneath a float. While this kind of unnatural forms of the trout fishing bait suit only the stocked trouts that live in the lakes, the ones in the river prefer the live trout baits.
