No. Throw it out there and let it sink. 99% of your bites will be when it is falling. If you don't feel anything, just pick it up and repeat.

I usually let it sink and then twitch it a little it and that seems to be when they hit. The main thing not to so is fish it fast

there are several different ways on fishing a whacky rig .

Weightless , or on a flicker head , even rig it on a dropshot

Let the fish tell you how they want it .... sometimes they hit on the fall sometimes they want it on the bottom lying still sometimes they'll hit it when you twitch it !!

Experiment ..... it catches fish .... do what works for you

Why cast it out, twitch for a little bit then reel in 60 feet of line...........?

Pause, twitch, move 1-2 feet, twitch, pull with rod tip down next to water 3-4feet really slow, feeling the bottom
pause and twitch................. cover the whole 60 foot area and learn what is down there !!

When done right , it is slower than jig fishing.......................and that's SLOW.

A lot of guys including myself only use the wacky rig when fishing around structure such as boat docks and bridges and some fallen timber. Bass almost always hit it on the fall if he doesn't hit it the first cast keep throwing at him if you know he is there. There has been fish i could see and it took 100 casts before it hit my wacky rigged worm.
