Flipping for smallies is only a 3 week window up here on spawning fish, in other words sight fishing. The rest of the year is deep usually Carolina rigging craws. Zoom speed craws in most green or brown patterns, also June bug the color in the heat of summer. Weightless senkos wacky rigged or like a Texas rig but weightless, drop shotted or Yankee rigged, can't go wrong. Gitz-it tubes on a jig head, weed-less later in the summer on light tackle when they get shy. Don't forget grubs and swim jigs and a million other options, Just start experimenting, every body of water is different, I've fished from Alabama to Champlain (home), and something's remain constant but many change.
