Reel Help

Postby shootnmiss09 » Thu May 31, 2007 5:30 pm

Hey-

I have 3 closed faced reels, and all three of em cast like 25ft and then all of a sudden stop....I put new line in one of 'em and it worked for a while, but now it's acting up again...Do i need to oil it or sumtin? If so where do I oil it?....The reels arent expensive ones, i think they are zebco's but they should still work..

One problem may be that you do not have enough line in the reel. This may cause the line to get caught on the top head of the spool when casting.

This may work or it may be something different.

Those old zebcos were built pretty bullet proof, I'd change the line on them and get a little grease on the gear inside. pick up some light reel grease from any sporting goods store. clean it, grease it, and line it and you should be good to go.

My suggestion is to get a Hammer, and well you know where I'm going. Go buy yourself an openfaced reel or a baitcaster and learn how to use it. Much more effficient casting, line pick-up and better gear ratios leading to a wider range of uses(pitchin, flippin, wormin, crankin, trolling).

OR just maintain what you have. If maintainence is too much the above option is prolly the best.

Good luck!

Hey GUys-

I just got done changinf lien and oiling up my 3 closed faced reels, and now they work great, at least for now!!! I found a Daiwa Underspin 80 in my garage to, it does not work as of now so I was hoping you can help me out...The handle part spins both ways, instead of one like it is suppose to..I know there is an om/off switch on there and i think that is what it is for, but when i turn the switch the handle still spins both ways, any suggestions?

On this one I'd give pillowcasr's hammer technique a try. :hammer:
go to one of the big sporting goods stores and pick up a couple 30 dollar combos. you'll be glad you did.

The line is not getting reeled in compact enough. Cast the line out as far as it will go then once it catches, start to pull out the line manually for a bit. When you start to reel it in put the rod in the palm of your left hand and pinch the line with your pointer and thumb as you reel in to put tension on the line. This is excactly what your problem is.

HI tried taht, but it wasn't the problem, cause the handle still spins both ways, and it never "clicks" so teh line can keep going out...Ne otehr ideas?

I use zebco's alot for crappy fishing, and have had that problem before, when it happens to me(which is seldom) i take the reel and stick the reel and handle and all in the water, in other words submerge it in the water and it works just about every time for me. I dont know why it works, i just know it does, its an old trick my dad told me a long time ago. HOpe that works for ya.

buy a new reel, you can get a zebco for really cheap. I personally recommend shimano or diawa.

The Shimano would probably be too drastict of a step from Zebco.

Bass Pro has a bait caster combo for $69 and it works really well.
