I used to run a platform out of Venice in Breton Sound, and about this time of year maybe earlier they would have boats show up with slaughter poles and fill the boat bow to stern with sheephead. They used jig heads with no barbs and would flip them in the boat and they would come right off the hook. They used a little piece of dead shrimp and when the bite slowed down they would slap the water with the ends of the poles. It was like watching someone perch jerking, they would fill the boat in a couple of hours and be back the next day for more.
yeah each year i go to florida and catch a bunch of them. take a small hook with a little crab and throw it under some docks and you should have sheepshead. we always threw them back, how do they taste?
We always deep fry them and tey taste delicious. Those along with some home fries, slaw, hush puppies, and a tea are the best. The big commerical fishermen used to throw them back when they caught them in their nets but now they relized what they were catching and how good they taste sometimes you will see them in the grocery store.
I catch em all the time in Florida. We keep them and eat them and I think they taste fine. There is a freshwater version also. I fish alot in Lake Erie and cannot help but catch them, they are a real pain. The biggest one I ever caught was 25'' long.
A year from now, you'll wish you had started today.
