.22 magnum rifle suggestions

Postby waterfowler9 » Mon Jan 21, 2013 4:39 pm

Looking into getting a rifle sometime in the near future to plink around and wanting advise on what to get. I am not dead set on 22 magnum but the little extra power over .22 LR is more appealing to me. As of right now the number 1 on my list is a Henry frontier with a octagon barrel. Due to hurricane Sandy the Henry factory took a hit Slowing production down. Everyone local gun shop I have been to does not have one in stock. I like the tube fed magazine and the idea of the lever action but i have only shot semi auto rifles is the past. Most rifles i have looked at has a magazine that sticks out (not flush with stock) which i do not like the looks of. Any suggestions or opinions would be great. Give me and idea of what to look for. thanks.

Maybe something to look into, I got a 17HMR about 6mo. ago and it has been a blast to shoot. I had 22's in the past but not nearly as fun. And the ballistic tips are really distructive for such a small round. My rifle likes the Winchester HV 17gr. but it rips squirrells in 2. Head shots only.

At one point Marlin was making a tube-fed bolt action 22WMR, they may still be. I have a mag-fed Marlin 22WMR and it is a tack driver.

If you really are interested in primarily casual plinking you should settle on an action type you enjoy first. When I wanted a .22 for the same purpose I found the idea of a lever gun most appealing since I grew up watching westerns and always wanted one. I ended up with a Henry Golden Boy. If accuracy rates higher than the "fun factor" for you a bolt action might be better. As far as caliber, a .17HMR or .22WMR will be a great hunting rifle but if all you are going to do is plinking there really isn't a reason to get more than a .22LR. The ammo will be much cheaper and it will kill tin cans and paper targets just as dead.

CZ makes a really nice semi auto 22 magnum that I am considering as something to fill an empty slot in the safe. but I might go for another bolt in the NEW winchester rimfire 17 super magnum. will have to wait for the reviews on it first. I have a 17HMR and love it for plinking or varmints. not much good for squirrel as everyone I took with the 17 comes down pre- gutted. my dad has the savage and I have the marlin and both print finger size holes at 100 yards with 10 shots.

Ruger makes the model 96 carbine lever action. I believe it uses a flush mount rotary magazine.

I have the Henry Golden Boy in .22 mag and its a great shooter. My only complaint is that the stock has a lot of drop so I have to rest my jaw against the stock rather than my cheek. I hear the Frontier model doesn't have as much drop.

I have a stainless Marlin bolt gun.......meh.

I have a little Taurus takedown pump action carbine. Lots of fun and way more accurate than you'd expect from such a little rifle.

My most accurate .22 mag is a stainless heavy barreled Savage with the laminate thumbhole stock. It is a tack driver but I don't think it would be a good do it all rifle.

My pick for a do it all .22 mag would be a Cz 452 "Trainer". I have one in .22 lr and it is a wonderfull rifle. It feels like a full sized rifle but its slender and feels lively. Plus it has military style sights that are graduated out to 250 yards. Lots of fun for long range plinking.

Years ago I bought a Marlin 17VSS and love shooting it. Mine is capable of shooting the primers out of empty shotgun shells at 100 yards (or the thumbtacks holding targets up) and I can easily shoot squirrels in the head at 125+ yards. It has much more energy than a .22lr and even a 22mag and is a total blast to shoot.

Yep , my RUGER 17 will do the same .I've dispatched quite a few SOUND Dogs with it too but , my 22 mag really did a better
job of killing with a heavier bullet .

For regularly knocking out primers at 100 you're going to need better than 1/4 MOA accuracy at 100. Time to buy a new range finder. :lol3:

What are you saying CLAMP ? I can hit a Coyote every time with this 17 at 175 yds , somewhere ! LOL

If the glass on the gun is good , it's a more accurate gun , most of the time !

I have the 22 mag equivalent of that gun (882SSV). Mine shoots groups the size of a quarter at 100 yards. Energy b/w the HMR and WMR is about equivalent, if anything the WMR has the edge. No doubt the 17 is a little flatter though.

savage accutrigger is the way to go... I've had this ^^ model in .22lr, .22mag but stainless, .17hmr stainless laminate thumbhole, and a predator 10 22-250... the trigger is amazing.....

I have a Marlin bolt action (less than $200 new) with a nice base/rings and a decent simmons 44 mag scope. The gun shoots 1/2" - 5/8" groups at 50 yards. Not a great squirrel rifle unless you head shoot them. My buddy and I compared his 17 and my 22 mag and he'd rather have the 22 mag. 22 mag ballistics are 1800 fps ish and the 17 is 2400 fps ish but the 22 mag seems to carry more energy on targets we have tested them on. Either way both fun to shoot and will take out any small game species with ease.

I have killed 73 Coyotes with my 17 HMR . I've shot them out to 200 + and killed them dead in their tracks inside 125 .
By having good Glass on a gun , this 17 is very deadly . until I bring out the 22-250 Flat Bolt .

But , I would say a 22 mag is better !
