So I purchased a long range waterfowl choke tube last year and I'd like to try it at the range to see the spread at different distances. My question is can I shoot lead through the choke tube or with it ruin it? Am I only supposed to shoot steel shot through it cause if so that is going to be expensive... Thanks
Don't worry , your long range steel shot choke is more likely to be a Mod or IM ! Best way to findout is have it measured
to your bore diameter , then go pattern it at 40 yds . Steel shot shoots tighter in most guns so , it takes more choke constriction
for lead .
you can shoot lead thru ANY choke that is rated for steel shot. BUT there is really no point shooting lead to check your patterns and they shoot steel for hunting. The patterns will be completely different. you can even alter patterns changing shot size, shell brand and shot weight. you really need to test with the load you will hunt with.
Lead vs steel is like apples vs oranges....................
Putting any load on paper to see what you have is a great idea........................
Sort of nice to know where it is hitting and what the pattern looks like, BEFOR you go into the field.
