New Yote Gun

Postby duckhunter85 » Fri Dec 18, 2009 5:38 pm

Just bought me a new yote gun today a savage 93r17-xp with a simmons 3-9x40 scope both in mossy oak brush camo... anyone else hunt yotes with a .17? i had a choice between .17 or .22 mag because the town i live in is shotguns and rimfire only so i went with a .17 only paid 319.99 at dicks sporting goods for the whole package

That's SWEET, Iam thinking of picking up the same set after seeing yours. It would be a great pickup gun for that lost dog shoot.

I would stay with the 22 mag, 17 doesnt have the energy to penetrate. Good gun, but look at the ballistics chart!

i have actually shot a yote with this gun since i bought it shot one 2 nights ago about 75-80 yard dropped it where it stood and i watched my buddys dad shoot one at about 200 yards off their back porch and dropped it right there. lots of people say a 17 isnt powerful enough but the obviously have never tried to kill anything with one

I went back and looked at the comparison. 17 has alot more energy than I thought, 22 mag still has it by 30% more energy at 100 yds plus. I think the real issue is the bullet breaking apart on impact, being it was designed for varmints and not the bigger coyotes. If you make good shots, you should do well.

Plus that camo job is way kool, is it dipped ?

it looks that way i really like it, plus it has the acu-trigger which is very nice i would recommend these savages to everyone they are light and pull up real nice. the reason i went with a 17 is they are flatter at 100yds and more i have seen what they do to squirrels (i know the size difference in them and yotes) but it pretty much cuts them in half. and it passed through they coyote my buddys dad shot at 200yds but not the one i shot at 75 which i thought was odd but might have hit a bone or something and shattered but all around it is a very accurate gun. me and my buddy were shooting inside a 6" pie plate at 300yrds the other day.

22 mag isnt as flat as the 17hmr for sure, but its still flat enuff to zero at 100yds and shot from 25-150yds. Plus theres the wide range of bullet weights from 20-50gr. 30 gr JHP compares to the 17hmr in velocity but has 30% more energy (CCI info).

My concern would be the bullet breaking up on a frontal shot. If you guys have good luck with it, more power to you. Shoot all them damn demon dogs you can !!!!

Looks nice. Brush camo blends really well where I'm at, so I'm a fan. I've never shot a coyote with a .17 before, but it does the same thing to praire dogs as you say it does to squirrels, so with good shot placement it should bring 'em down. I don't think I'd stretch it to 200 yds like your buddy's dad did though. I'm not sure you'd get consistent performance at that range.
