coon bait

Postby IlHunter » Thu Dec 11, 2008 11:20 pm

Just wondering wat ur favorite bait is for coons, especially in the colder months. early in the season i use marshmallows and syrup but when it gets cold it seems to be less affective. just wondering other guys are using. thanks

Exactly what I was going to say. I used to get expired peanut butter for early fall, then switch to salmon for the colder weather.

No objections here. "Sweet in the heat, fishy in the cold", but why not mix em together I remember when I was younger my dad made his own lure with peanut butter, marshmellow creme, tuna, and expired eggs. There may have been other ingrediants too. Im not sure but he used the same lure all season. Be creative, you cant really mess it up, the stinkier the better. Maybe throw in some sardines, syrup, rotten milk, cat food (canned or dry), a urine of one type or another. Use your imagination, coon are omnivores even bad vegies that have been fermenting in the bottom drawer of your refrigerator will probably work. Leftover stroganoff from 2 weeks ago. You get the idea.

I've always used the cheap honeybuns in stores and catch'em all the time in live traps.

I don't like mixing them for one reason really. If you use the same thing over and over you wind up educating the animals you're trapping, which is always bad. You'll miss some or have some chew out and they won't come back if you use it over and over. If you switch it up they could possibly come back.

A good dirt hole set can't be beat for coon. I stay with the sweet baits early. In the water, raccoon come to meaty, fish-type baits. In wet weather, I use smear baits, which are unsurpassed.
4oz. Fish juice
1 tsp. Honey essence
1 oz.ground beaver castor
1/2 oz. tinctured civet musk
Mix in enough bone meal to form a thick paste
