I dont see how you guys with mid-size trucks haul your gear!!! by the time I have 2-4 people in my cab, guns blind bags and coats in/under the back seat, waders in the tool box, and then blinds and few doz decoys in the bed my truck is PACKED

I have a Ram 1500 single cab/long bed/4x4. When huntin season rolls around I have a camper/topper/what ever you call em that I put on it. I can pack a ton of crapp in it and then some and still have room for the dogs, and everything stays high and dry. By far the best money I've ever spent. When spring rolls around I take it off, store it in my shop and Im ready to haul feed, fence post or what ever.

I know a lot of folks aren't fans of the 5.4 but I have a 2010 Ford F-150 crew 4 x 4 and LOVE it!! No problems at all and plenty of power. And if I keep the speed below 65, I can get 21 mpg on highway.

there is no way a 5.4l is pulling 21mpg on the highway.

My 2001 Ford SCREW has 318000 miles on it aand has only had the coil packs, reas axel seal, and one front wheel hub replaced. It is a 4x4 with a 5.4 and still gets 15MPG. With that said, I'll probably switch over to Dodge when I get ready to replace it.

Ducksngesse, I'm curious if you have checked your spedo to a gps of any sort. I programed my 5.4 to 35s as well but the speedo is off by 5mph at 70.

Im a die hard ford guy. Ford mpg not the greatest. They ride like a truck. Chevys do ride better. But almost all of.my chevy buddies say when it comes to a work truck they would rather have a Ford.

Sorry bud but bride and I made trip to Nashville. Drove Natchez Trace (speed limit is 50). I kept it under 60 there and back and got 21.4. That's hand calculated running premium.

i would need to hear from more than one person that a 5.4 gets 21 mpg. If it is possible, ford would have printed it on the dealer tag from day one. I get no more than 14, but wait. Is 21mpg on 2wd? Still sounds impossible.

Now i drive 05 f350 diesel and average 18.2high way 15.7 o 16.2 in town i love it.Oh and itpulls the big duck boats way better.Best milage i have seen was my friends 06 supercrew 5.4 with edge tuner air intake exhaust with stock tires hit 19.2 driving to peoria to preselys two yrs ago. With thatbeing said it was a 14.7 mpg all the time no matter what with the 35's on it.

I find 21mpg in a 5.4 unlikely, even with the 6-speed, but under the right conditions....maybe. Diesel is great if you need it, but they cost more upfront, they cost more to maintain, fuel is more expensive....by the time you factor all that in the "improved mileage" doesn't add up to any net gain.

To upgrade a brand new ford to diesel it cost about 8 grand. You can buy alot of gas for 8 grand.

Yep, my point exactly. Not to mention more expensive oil changes, fuel filters more often, more expensive fuel (75 cent/gal here), and other items that typically eventually go bad on a diesel like injectors, lift pumps, etc.

I have eight blue oval diesels, obviously non owner driven, that go til 500k. The last 3 were retired because the bodies quit before the motors. The mileage is a definate consideration for me. Sitting next to the fords is a gmc duramax. Its the last one to leave the lot because the crew prefers the ride of a ford. I 100% regret the 5.4 as my daily driver as i would get much more use out of diesel. With that said, i do agree with most of what your saying. But a diesel can easily pay for itself if you put up alot of mileage.

I know a guy that owns a large construction company that runs a lot of trucks. For years and years he would buy a new Chevy and a new Ford at the same time and keep track of the records. He has quit buying Chevy as he said the fords broke less and lasted longer.

I test drove a F150xlt ecoboost 4x4 extended cab, and a six foot bed today. The truck was loaded. It has power an speed, runs on regular gas , an has twin turbos. $ 32,000 is way to much to pay for only driving 6,000 miles a year on it. But if I could get it for $28,000 I'd buy it.

completely empty they run great, but load them up..... the little TTv6 shows its still a v6 and hunts for gears and struggles on hills. we took my buddy's ecoboost fishing with his 21ft boat and 11mpg is all she got pulling the boat along with constant up shifting and down shifting just trying to stay at 70mph with cruise control on.

2 questions....

1) what gears did she have? I'm guessing 3.55s, I've never heard that complaint from anyone with 3.73s or 4.10s.

2) what kind of mileage do you think a conventional v8 1/2 ton would get pulling the same 21' boat?

IMHO a conventional v8 would get around 14 or so at 70. However, the v8 wouldn't be searching for gears which would make your tranny last a bit longer.

You're delusional if you think a conventional v8 gets 14 towing a 21' boat....hell with a boat that big I bet a diesel doesn't see better than 15

I didnt buy into that ecoboost but i got 16 mpg at 65 cruise in my v8 pulling my 16 ft last weekend it was empty. I also have a lift with 35 mud terrains on it that don't help with mileage. With a 21 ft I would think I wouldn't get any better than 14 at best.

I guess I was thinking of a fiberglass hull 21 ft'er. For a 21' jon boat 14mpg is realistic.

Huh, I remember pulling my 20' chapparrel ski boat to the lake and getting 13-15mpg depending on how hard I drove. Did that with an 02 f-150 supercrew 5.4 and an '04 f-150 supercab with the 5.4 as well. But I know nothing about trucks so hey...
