I forgot to add that I play in the mud quite a bit and planned on keeping the currents tires on those wheels for winter

I have had a 2000 F150 and a 2001 F150. They were both short bed standard cabs. Witht hat said, i was running 285/75r16 BFGs on both of them on Centerline 16x9.5 rims. They were large enough you cant fun any srot fo mud flap, but i ddint really care. you MAY be able to step up to a 305/70, but you woiuld have to crank the torsion bars int eh front or trim the lower bumper to keep from scrubbing.

IF i were you i would step down to a 16 or 15 inch rim and get a 9-9.5 width. That would allow you to get more tire in your wheel wells (which qwould allow more side bite) and you would have a better selection of tires due to the 15 and 16 inch wheels have been a roudn a little longer. I wouldnt go too wide of a rim due to the IFS. You will be putting front end parts and bearings in it if you go too wide.
Shoot'em close. Less to pick.

They might get my guns, but they'll get the bullets first !

It's not only the width but the backspacing and offset that wear out steering and suspension parts.

To the OP, backspacing is simply the distance from the inner lip of the wheel to the mounting surface. Generally aftermarket wheels have less backspacing than OE wheels, which means they stick out farther and put more stress on ball joints, bearings, etc. I would go with something like a 16x8 wheel with 285/75/16s (metric equivalent of a 33") mounted on it. Generally speaking, a narrower wheel holds a bead better than a wide one (with the same size tire that is)

i would say you would be able to fit 32's or 33's on there, there are plenty of stock lift trucks round here with 33's
