The best ones I have killed on both islands were in the higher altitudes away from the Mallard areas which seem to be in the lower marshes and more settled areas. Sadly a lot of the pure Grays have disappeared from their normal ranges much like our American Black Duck. Some biologists I have spoken with over there say the gene pool is becoming rapidly diluted by Mallards. I have killed and mounted some beautiful specimens over the years and they are an impressive bird.

quite a few pair on the hydro canals around Twizel, the wild wet west coast has good numbers too.
