How are the women out there doing this season? It's so quiet on this forum I'm wondering if anyone's out there anymore...
I'm a new hunter, and so far I've had two successful hunts - one pheasant, one duck - and three hunts where I didn't fire a shot. But I'm optimistic about the weekend coming up.
Been hunting in flooded rice fields and boy was it fun trying to learn to walk in that stuff. Fell like a toddler, over and over. Good thing I only got one duck that day, because I don't think I can slog 10 feet without tipping over. After the first time I realized pretty quickly that I didn't need to catch myself with my hand (and soak my jacket in the process) - that falling to your knees in a foot of water is good enough.
Tell me your stories, ladies! I need to hear from my role models
I have got to go some but not much luck!
my husband and i have gone woodduck hunting on a canoe and we seen about 50 but could not get them to come in.
and have been sea duck hunting but not in nc yet to hunt but everyday we get a chance we go just to check it out.
I'm not a woman but this is my girlfriends first season. She sat through the hunter's ed and waterfowl ID courses. I took her out to jump shoot some geese. She fired the only shots. When the dust cleared she was jumping up and down shouting "I shot 3!!" It was really fun.
I also toook her out and she took a nice shot on her first wood duck
It's a lot of fun having women out in the field, keep it up  . I just wish she didn't get so cold so easily in the duck blind.
That's very cool! I wish I had advice for her on staying warm, but I live in California and ya know, it's just not that cold out here, so maybe what I do wouldn't work there.
But just in case: I've got a water-resistant Gamehide jacket with removable liner that took care of me pretty well when we spent five hours hunting in a cold rain on Sunday. But my hands and wrists were soaked, and I'm going to blame the discomfort for my incredibly bad shooting at the few ducks that came within range. My best advice is to go to a local running or camping store (like REI) and get their high-tech clothing as liners - tights and longsleeved shirt to go under waders and jacket. I trained for a marathon in Minnesota, and I use that clothing for duckhunting here. It's expensive, but really good - very warm and breathable. It's rated for various temperatures, and you just have to take into account that a shirt rated for 0 degrees when you're running isn't going to be quite as good sitting still, because you're not generating heat. So buy stuff rated for colder weather than you think you'll face.
Also, it's very cool that you have waterfowl ID courses in NY. I loved the hunter safety class I had to take to get licensed here because I learned a lot, but we didn't have anything on identification, so I rely on my huntin' buddy for now.
Please ask your girlfriend to jump on DHC! We need more women. :salude:

Just keep pestering him 'til he takes you. And you'll only get better from the first time you're out.
